Video Transmission

A video transmitter (TX) can be connected to the live ouput of the video cameras to send the images to the ground.  The pilot can either use these images to pilot the aircraft in FPV or just to check what kind of pictures or videos are currently filmed. On the ground side, there is the receiver presented in the picture. Please also see the Ground station page to see how to optimize the reception.

You must select both a frequency and the power of the transmission. Regarding power please consider that high power will generate more interferences with other systems on board of your aircraft. High power therefore does not necessarily increase the transmission range, the best way to improve range is to ensure that the transmitter, receiver and antennas are tuned to the frequency that is selected. Typical transmission power ranges from 10 mW to 1.5 W.

There are a few option to select the video transmission frequency. When selecting the frequency, one must consider the specificity of each frequency and take into account legal considerations. The pros and cons of the different options are summarized in the table below:

Besides the legal restrictions, keep in mind that for multirotor style of flying, we are not trying to achieve an incredible range, our multirotor autonomy of flight is the limiting step in the range and there is no real need to achieve more than a few hundred meters to make nice videos.
